Five synchronous stories: an overstayed virgin (Toni Collette), tortured by an old, sick, senile mother, somewhat envious of a torn, raped corpse and craving similar violence against herself; the dead girl's sister (Rose Byrne), who works as a pathologist got despairs while waiting for her missing beloved sister; wife (Mary Beth Hurt) withering and aging in front of the TV, who learned the terrible truth about her indifferent husband; the somnambulist mother who fucked up the life of her growing daughter; and, finally, the dead girl - a downtrodden drug addict and a slut angry at the world, living in a roadside motel. All them are united by the neighborhood of death, which hangs over them, follows in the footsteps, accompanies, waits ahead, lurks in nature and things, and even in the surrounding household items. Blood relationship, motherhood, marriage and other social and tribal ties ultimately lead to separation, to resentment, anger and disappointment. And such long-rotten things as friendship, love, sex only add sharpness to the pain of an inevitable break.
