Ireland, the sixties of the last century. Three girls are expelled from society and ended up in the asylum of St. Magdalene. What is their crime? Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff) was raped by her own brother, Rose (Dorothy Duffy) gave birth to an illegitimate child, and Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone) was accused of behaving licentiously in the street, in the presence of men. Now for this they must work in the laundry of the asylum, and in their free time pray in the chapel and endure the bullying and medieval obscurantism that occurs in the Magdalene asylum. The slightest disobedience, or deviation from the strict regime, entails corporal punishment. Order is monitored by the Sisters of Mercy.
