Elia is a rude, unfriendly man. While his behavior makes him unlikable, he is nonetheless a figure one can understand, a man who acts according to his own judgment and holds fast to his principles. The village’s most impervious man, the one most resistant to female charms, falls for every cheap trick employed by a girl from the big city (Ornella Muti). He then proceeds to humiliate her, both emotionally and physically, parading her naked through the village, laughing loudly when she falls down the stairs, smashing dishes in a frenzy, and striking her in the face with a bucket. She possesses not a single redeeming quality, her lack of self-respect is repulsive, and she simply debases herself before Elia in a desperate bid for his attention. Yet, Elia falls in love with her.
