Hanna (Sarah Polley) is a peculiar young woman who wears a hearing aid and leads an incredibly regimented life, one that has become almost entirely automatic. Each morning, she heads to work at a film manufacturing plant, for lunch, she eats nothing but chicken, rice, and half an apple, and after work, she returns home to a space of perfect order, featuring a neat stack of white soap bars in the bathroom. She interacts with no one, never falls ill, and is never late. By a twist of fate, Hanna finds herself on an oil rig, the site of a recent explosion, working as a caregiver for a burn victim. Josef, the man injured in the accident, is bedridden and temporarily blind. For him, she becomes far more than just a caregiver, someone whose face he cannot even see. It is Josef who suddenly awakens in her a zest for life she had long been denied. Neither of them could have imagined just how much they needed each other, or what they would come to mean to one another.
