A long-ailing mother dies, and her prodigal husband, who has long since left home, comes to say goodbye. He is greeted by two daughters, and while one, Agnes, pretends that the separation is not fatal, Nora has no intention of pretending. Agnes's life is full of bourgeois happiness, a husband, a home, a job without creativity, and an angelic son. Nora's life has turned out differently, she is an actress in the local theater, a walking bundle of psychological trauma, and the only romantic role she has ever played in real life is that of the mistress of a married urban intellectual. Her father, a prominent film director, invites Nora to a meeting in a cafe. But instead of the long-planned conversation about hes absence, she receives an offer to star in her father's new film. Nora's nervous system gives out, and in response to his outstretched hand with a script, she responds with cold aggression. Having received a refusal, the confused family patriarch invites an American superstar to the role.
