Marie (Theresa Russell) and Alex, a Catholic couple and both doctors arrive in Mexico. Marie has an affair and plans to confess her infidelity to Alex during the trip. But fate has other plans, while swimming in the bay, Alex is struck by a motorboat. He is rushed to the hospital, but dies during surgery. The next morning, Marie is informed that Alex's body has disappeared just before the scheduled autopsy. This is the first alarming sign, setting the mystical tone for the entire story. Marie returns to Los Angeles while authorities try to piece together what happened.
