Daniel is a typical unhappy and confused representative of planet Earth, with a tragic and unclear past that has left him with a host of complexes, a joyless present consisting of a strange mixture of routine and uncertainty, and a rather uncertain future. His sluggish romance with a workaholic girl, Sonia (Charlotte Gainsbourg), doesn't promise him a cozy family life anytime soon. His job involves physical labor. Combining infrequent meetings with his girlfriend, visits to a nursing home, and work, he comes to the conclusion that things are so bad that the only thing left for him is to constantly walk around with a gloomy, angry expression, sinking deeper and deeper into the abyss of universal sadness and sorrow. To make his already difficult life seem less of a fairy tale, a stranger, man slightly older than middle age, begins to follow him around, offering hugs and passionate declarations of love at every opportunity.
