Henry, a resident of a backwater apartment building, has a bad reputation. He's a boor, a foul-mouthed, inveterate cynic, and also an unemployed lover of alcohol and women. Every evening, Henry visits a bar, where he hangs out with other misfits. His antics also drive the bartender Eddie crazy, who dreams of punching the rowdy drunk. But no one around Henry realizes he's a talented writer, secretly submitting his work to a literary magazine. Henry's life changes when one evening he meets the mysterious and alcoholic Wanda (Faye Dunaway). She's a bit insecure, perhaps a bit harsh in her remarks, but always consistent and a little sad. Of course, these two are made for each other.
