At the age of fifteen, Mark alarmed his friends by declaring that he was the real John Lennon and forbidding anyone to call him Mark. The schoolboy claimed that his idol had betrayed everyone and everything, that God had turned away from him, and that it was up to Mark, not John, to atone for those sins and take his place. As time went on, Chapman imitated John in every way. He married an older Asian woman and experimented with a host of drugs. Yet he never managed to recover from the drug use, spiraling instead into a deep, harrowing depression. He attempted suicide and repeatedly checked into psychiatric facilities at his wife’s urging, but nothing helped. Mark could have tried to kill himself again, but it was far easier to kill John. And so, he stands outside the "Dakota".
