Frankie (Halle Berry) is a young stripper in Los Angeles. She suffers from frightening "personality shifts." Her mind gradually shifts from a heavy drinker, promiscuous prostitute, to a brilliant white racist. Unsurprisingly, this leads to numerous problems for her, both psychological and legal. After being hospitalized after one episode, Frankie falls under the care of an emotionally devastated psychiatrist. He's a good doctor, having previously researched the effects of LSD on the human mind. This doctor is a sullen man who treats his depression with tuna sandwiches, jazz, and liqueur. Meeting Frankie perks him up. Frankie admits she's crazy, and according to the doctor, she's a remarkable example of the kind of person who can access alternate realities through chemical dysfunction in their body. In a sense, they represent the perfect doctor-patient combination. And it looks like each of them can help the other.
