When things are going badly, have you ever thought, "How much worse can it get?" It could always get worse. A teacher named April (Helen Hunt) is going through a midlife crisis. She feels like nothing has made sense. She tries to cope, but things get worse when her husband leaves her, and a few days later, her stepmother dies. Something else happens, April finds her real mother. But this doesn't bring her happiness, as her real mother turns out to be a very eccentric woman who doesn't care about her daughter at all. In the pitch darkness of her life, April seems to find a ray of light in the father of one of her students, who will support the unfortunate woman.
