The hapless director Francois is looking for money to film a drug movie, starring his friend Lucie. François is dogged by failure, so his last chance turns out to be an elderly gentleman with a criminal past who offers money for a large shipment of heroin. Francois, naturally, accepts. Lucie and Francois are out of touch with their time, mired in the past. For example, they write classically styled letters to each other, dress outdatedly, and clearly prefer a theoretical existence in a poetic world to the practicalities of life. Their relationship, initially resembling love, in a matter of days has transformed into a reliable way for them to question their own lives and, therefore, to cling even more tightly to their joint project as their only chance for salvation.
