Jim survived the horrors of the Vietnam War and managed to adjust to civilian life, he found a woman he loved with all his heart, and they had a son. But then, one dark day, Jim’s family was killed. Having known nothing but pain and loss, Jim decides to escape society for a remote island to live in harmony with nature, and to protect the crawling and flying creatures there from any outside threats. Jim can easily connect with wild animals, yet he is at a loss when dealing with people, unsure whether to offer a friendly smile or reach for his knife. Stella (Kathleen Turner) is raising her son alone, constantly fending off drunken fishermen, and dreaming of a life with Jim, who pays her no mind. Since Jim ignores her, Stella decides to make him jealous by flirting with a charming photographer. The photographer has arrived to steal eggs from a rare breed of eagle, eggs a mad collector is willing to pay a fortune for. The only obstacle is the reclusive Jim, who rarely leaves the island where the eagles nest.
