Tereza Srbova "Eastern Promises" (2007)

A 14-year-old Russian girl, who was admitted to a London maternity hospital on Christmas Eve, dies during childbirth. Anna, a midwife from a family of Russian immigrants, tries to find out the circumstances of her fate. With the deceased girl's diary and a card with the name of a restaurant in her hands, she tries to find out something about the girl's relatives or loved ones. In the restaurant, she meets the elderly owner Semyon, who tells Anna, who doesn't know Russian well, that he will help her figure out the diary. Meanwhile, Anna's mother has already read the diary, from which it becomes clear that the girl was kidnapped from Russia, beaten, put on heroin and forced into prostitution.
