After all, those who rise to power seek to cling to it at any cost, often resorting to the basest of tactics. The President is an arrogant man entangled in political machinations, despite his good intentions, he cannot shake off a shady past. And while the French system is a far cry from American-style democracy (in Paris, for instance, one might easily strike up a conversation with the president’s daughter at a bus stop, and the president himself risks losing his job over a minor judge’s investigation or a newspaper scandal), one is reminded once again that politicians are the same everywhere, and the new elite in every country treats the people like a herd.
