Before the outbreak of World War I, the wealthy dreamer Count Forbeck begins building a castle of hapiness. After the war, he wants to found a society of the future here with his friends, his former fiancee, Livia, and her boyfriend. During the summer time, the castle hosts a seminar dedicated to finding the most advanced educational methods. For crowd of educators pontificating about educational methods, there are only four children being educated. But the Count's plan fails when Livia, who has secretly not taken the prescribed medication, discovers that her boyfriend accidentally dies due to the carelessness of the staff. Livia and Elisabeth (Sabine Azema), another guest at the castle, are disgusted by the general enthusiasm for utopia.
