Melissa (Naomi Watts) works a modest job at a small store and lives in a motel with her paraplegic boyfriend, Richie. They're at rock bottom, yet they still love each other. Richie, feeling helpless, tries to help in other ways - driving his wife to work, cooking a modest dinner, dismantling a DVD player to scrape together a little cash. And then, arranging an evening of cuddles in a cheap motel room. It was this love and fortitude that helped the couple endure the difficult times they've been through - the news of their pregnancy and the loss of their job. Plus, there are a multitude of domestic troubles: an ex-lover who won't leave them alone, a mother who, despite all her love, doesn't really crave "hugs" from her daughter, family quarrels, and now forced eviction... Mel and Richie are faced with a difficult test, and that little one, called upon to serve as a saving ray of light, unfortunately becomes superfluous.
