Aspiring writer Wilhelm, having received a large sum of money as a gift from his mother, immediately sets off on a melancholy journey, along with a suitcase full of a typewriter, magazines about horse breeding and lace scarves, in order to gather impressions along the way and write a book. Having met a typical homeless person Laertes and his corrupted companion Mignon (Nastassja Kinski), they wander off together, sadly and silently. Wilhelm is interested in his new companions. He is looking for material for his novel. But unexpectedly, love appears in his life.
