Beautiful Val (Marta Etura) lives with her younger sister in a godforsaken village in northern Spain, helping her father, Gildo, with the farmwork. At the annual competition for the best cow and calf, tensions flare. One of the farmers is found dead. Gildo, fearing a fair arrest, decides with his daughter to hide the cause of his neighbor's death. The murdered farmer's son arrives from the city for the funeral, determined to understand the cause of his father's death. Val is torn between his love for the neighbor's son and his sense of duty to his father.
