Nightclub singer Jane, having lost her job, decides to leave New York for Los Angeles. She responds to an advertisement by a certain Robin, who is just looking for a fellow traveler for such a long trip. Together, the girls hit the road and in Pittsburgh they take in their company a third girl - Holly (Drew Barrymore), who is trying to escape from her drug addict husband. On the way, the girls get to know each other better, imbued with respect and mutual understanding. All girls are very different. Robin has AIDS, Jane is a lesbian, and Holly really wants to escape her past and find a good person for herself.
