Manny has just been released from a mental hospital and is trying to start a new life. Believing that everyone deserves a "second chance," he takes a job as a doorman at the small New York City hotel, the El Cortez. Despite its unglamorous status, life at the hotel is bustling: a small-time drug dealer named Jack has checked into one of the rooms with his stunning girlfriend, Theda (Tracy Middendorf), who immediately takes notice of Manny. Meanwhile, another hotel guest, a wheelchair-bound gold mine owner with the odd name Popcorn, unexpectedly offers Manny a partnership. This "gold mine" will require the quiet doorman to show his true character and fight for his happiness against the police, drug dealers, and a gang of crooks.
