Michael Kohlhaas lived a happy life for a time, until an injustice committed against him drove him to war. It all began with an unpleasant incident, a local baron's men demanded toll from him for traveling across his land. Unable to pay, Michael was forced to hand over two of his horses. He later learned that the baron's claims were unfounded. Attempts to settle the matter peacefully and recover damages were unsuccessful. On the contrary, his wife was seriously wounded and died soon after. This turn of events forced Michael to turn from words to action. To prove the injustice of the situation, he took up arms, and soon a veritable rebel army gathered around him.
