A twelve-year-old red-haired boy is left alone in a castle with his mother, entrusted to him by his father, who has gone off to war. The only person in whom little Arnaud has complete faith is his sister, Beatrice (Julie Delpy), a gentle and refined creature. She, like Arnaud, eagerly awaits her father. But soon Arnaud, too, is forced to go to war, leaving his beloved sister behind. Beatrice's father, returning from the war, continues to plunder, burn, and rape, disillusioned with life, himself, and his son, who has proven to be a coward. He doesn't even hesitate to rape his own daughter.
