Juan, having joined the Carmelite order, becomes disillusioned with the way the community's original rules have changed, with the monks departing from the principles of asceticism and humility. Seeking to return the order to its roots, Juan initiates reform and ultimately founds his own branch within the order, strictly adhering to the original canons. This schism encounters resistance from some Carmelites. Juan is arrested and imprisoned in a cramped cell, where he spends nine months in extremely harsh conditions. Despite the deprivations and torture, Juan maintains spiritual fortitude. In captivity, he continues to create, and it was there that he wrote several of his famous mystical works.
