Kurt, due to his pacifist and anti-fascist publications, finds himself under increasing political and legal pressure. Seeking a brief escape from his troubling reality, he and his lover, Lydia (Heike Makatsch), whom he affectionately calls "Princess," go on vacation to the Swedish castle of Gripsholm at the invitation of a baron he knows. Amidst idyllic nature and tranquil country life, the couple finds temporary refuge, cycling, swimming, and enjoying freedom and intimacy. However, this peaceful idyll is gradually disrupted by news from Germany. An old friend of Kurt's who sympathizes with the Nazis arrives at the castle, escalating the conflict and forcing Kurt to realize how profoundly times have changed. Lydia's friend, a Berlin variety performer (Jasmin Tabatabai), also arrives with him, introducing new nuances and tensions into their relationship. As the summer draws to a close, the characters increasingly realize that their attempts to escape the impending catastrophe are futile. Kurt realizes he can no longer remain in Germany and considers a life in exile.
