Arthur isn't living the life he dreams of. He works as a traveling salesman, traveling across the country selling sheet music. It's not very profitable, and he has a boring wife (Jessica Harper) who is embarrassed by intimacy. Arthur dreams of living like the songs and opening a record store, so he persuades his wife to invest her father's money in the business. But the venture proves unsuccessful and doesn't bring him happiness. During one of his trips, Arthur meets and seduces a local teacher (Bernadette Peters), after which her life goes downhill. She becomes pregnant by Arthur, loses her job, gets rid of the child, and becomes a prostitute.
