Helene's mentally ill husband, Charles, beats their son. Charles, with the support of wealthy and controlled parents, accuses Helene of the poor living conditions of their son in order to gain custody. While the boy is hospitalized, Helene rents a room in a nearby house. Paul, in need of money, is hired to dig up dirt on Helene before a court hearing. Paul moves in next to Helene and, with the help of his friend Sonia (Catherine Rouvel), attempts to ruin Helene's reputation and, subsequently, her entire life.
