Art historian John, who studies oriental motifs in Delacroix's work, lives in a gloomy mansion in the Arab quarter of Marrakech. He occasionally amuses himself by tying his young maid, Belkis (Dany Verissimo), to the bed and shredding her dress with scissors. One day, at the souk, he sees a blonde girl (Arielle Dombasle) in a gauze cape, who leads him to the home of a pretentious art lover, Anatoli. Anatoli, the proprietor of a sadomasochistic den where sequined dominatrixes whip submissive sex slaves, shows John a pile of Delacroix's erotic watercolors, in which he recognizes the gauze-clad girl. The scholar falls in love with his own obsession and, after a while, comes to the attention of the Marrakech police, who seem to be monitoring not only reality but also dreams.
