The lower strata of American society. Drug addicts. They live together. Spoon has sex with a girl named Cookie (Thandie Newton) in front of Stretch, Cookie even invites him to join in, and they pee in the same toilet. It's not that they're not embarrassed, it's just that they have no standards of decency or laws other than those dictated by life. They don't care about health, cleanliness, or reputation. On New Year's Eve, little Cookie overdoses on her first attempt at shooting up. First, the ambulance doesn't show up, then the taxi won't stop, then the receptionist refuses to call a doctor, and Cookie could have died. But she fights. After reflecting on the situation, Spoon and Stretch decide to quit. The rehab center won't accept them without their cards, they send them to the wrong place to get their card, then they get the wrong place again and so on. So it turns out that the noble goal of quitting drugs runs into a wall of bureaucracy and indifference.
