Alex Holbeck is a German dissident who disagrees with the pro-Soviet regime and is forced to immmigrate to Paris. He is tasked by the CIA to sneak into the Soviet embassy in East Berlin and steal a legendary cipher machine called Enigma. Faced with an extremely complex code that Soviet agents use to exchange messages, the Americans want to get their hands on the Enigma because it's the only way to decipher the code. Upon arrival in Berlin, Alex instantly falls into the field of view of the East German and Soviet secret services, and he has to constantly hide from surveillance. Invaluable help to the hero is provided by his beloved Karen (Brigitte Fossey), who for the sake of business gets acquainted with a Soviet agent, and then becomes his mistress.
