Englishman Hamish and his fiancee Sarah (Janet McTeer) travel to an Asian country. Hamish must build a road from a remote ivory trading post run by Mrs. Jones. Upon arrival, the couple encounters depressing living and working conditions. Tensions escalate due to the tense atmosphere within Mrs. Jones's family, particularly the emotionally unstable behavior of her son William. William soon becomes enraged, and the newcomers are forced to consider their own safety. The young couple's love and high hopes, their obvious affection for each other, become a catalyst for those around them, awakening greed, aggression, and madness within the closed community. Tragedy ultimately unfolds, with everyone becoming victims of the others' shattered dreams.
