Searching for his missing father, doctor Plarr stops in a Latin American border town. There, he meets a young woman, Clara (Elpidia Carrillo), in a brothel. They are destined to meet again much later, when she has already married the British Honorary Consul, Fortnum, a hard-drinking man. Plarr and Clara begin a love affair, while Fortnum is taken hostage by local guerrillas and taken away. Caught in a maelstrom of politics, personal sympathies, and sexual vicissitudes, Plarr ultimately meets his death.
