Tai-Pan means "fortunate man" in Chinese. He is a former cabin boy who became a wealthy opium trader and smuggler. He is opposed by the trading house of Brock. Hong Kong has been declared a British colony, as the British were driven out of Canton, but the British love tea, and the Chinese are unwilling to sell it for silver. The British could buy it, but opium is cheaper and more profitable. Brock, who served as third mate on the same ship as Tai-Pan, has bought up all of Tai-Pan's bills in London and wants to ruin the charming darling of fortune, stopping at nothing. But this opium trader is handsome, charming, strong, intelligent, kind in his own way, honest, and noble. He has adopted the Chinese way of life and does not consider his race superior. Both the British and the Chinese love him, and even the Chinese sympathize with this barbarian, as they call everyone born outside the borders of the divine empire.
