In 16th-century Europe, the Catholic Church was involved in all aspects of life, from government to everyday ceremonies. To replenish the clergy, the Church took on the responsibility of raising orphaned boys. Two such children, Martin and Georg, are raised together until they are separated. Georg is taken by the Archbishop to his hometown to serve. Martin enlists in the military and reaches the rank of captain. Fifteen years later, his unit is quartered near the old house where he lived, and he takes the opportunity to see an old friend. Because Martin is wounded, he remains in the city for a while and soon falls in love with a girl named Anna (Anastasia Griffith), a sorceress and healer.
