Nina Hoss "Pelikanblut" (2019)

Wiebke (Nina Hoss) trains horses for the police. She already has an adopted daughter and is considering adopting another child, 5-year-old Raya, a girl with severe psychological trauma. At first, Wiebke is determined to help her new daughter adapt and find happiness. However, over time, Raya's behavior becomes increasingly aggressive and antisocial, she displays violent outbursts, poses a threat to others, and gradually turns the family's life into a nightmare. Wiebke doesn't give up and tries to find a way to reach the girl, she consults with specialists and seeks ways to help Raya overcome her inner demons. But the deeper she delves into the problem, the more she senses that it's not just the psychological trauma that's at play, an unsettling, almost mystical atmosphere is brewing around the girl. Even animals (including horses) begin to act restless in her presence. Wiebke faces a painful choice, abandon attempts to save Raya for the sake of her family's safety, or go all the way, risking everything, in the name of maternal love and faith in a cure.
