After many years of marriage, Jeanne (Jeanne Moreau) feels an inner emptiness and dissatisfaction, fueled by emotional austerity and a lack of attention from her wealthy, business-minded husband, who is entirely immersed in his work. She's completely cooled toward him, or perhaps she never had any particular feelings for him to begin with. Out of sheer boredom, Jeanne spends her time in Parisian society. A friend introduces her to a respectable regular at the Parisian high society, with whom a sluggish affair begins. Jeanne remains cold to him, too. Her feelings for her lover differ little from her attitude toward her husband. Her husband also doesn't seem happy in his family life, there's a distinct tension in their relationship, and he realizes he's losing Jeanne. A chance encounter with a young archaeologist changes everything in her life. And so begins her journey to self-discovery.
