A small provincial town in California. Henry's parents are preparing their son for a musical education and dream of him performing at Carnegie Hall as a piano player. But Henry works with his friend Nicky at a local bowling alley, and all he can think about is his impending military service, which they will be enlisting in six weeks. These boys come from poor families, so their only future lies in the Marine Corps.
