After Barbara (Jill Clayburgh)'s crazy decision to quit taking Valium, which she'd been consuming in enormous doses, and her boyfriend's equally crazy "help," what was bound to happen happened. Later, after several months of treatment, her doctor told Barbara, "You would have ended up here anyway." The main reason wasn't the Valium itself, but the fact that she was using it to suppress her body's warning signals. She was trying to dance faster than she could. Often, when choosing a profession or place of work, people are guided by its prestige and the material benefits it will bring, without considering their psychophysiological characteristics. And just as often, this leads to tragedy. Human potential is far from limitless, and just because someone can occasionally jump above their head doesn't mean they can do it often or for long.
